Participatory Budgeting in New York City

One of the largest and oldest participatory budgeting processes in North America, organized by the New York City Council. Since 2011, the process has grown to include a majority of Districts, giving communities real decision-making over more than $30 million on an annual basis.

The People's Money

In September 2022, the New York City Mayor's Office and the CEC launched the first ever citywide participatory budgeting. People all over New York decided how to spend $5 million of the city’s budget to address local community needs.

The Mukuba and Nkana Secondary Schools in Kitwe, Zambia

Participatory budget was organized at two schools, the Nkana and Mukuba secondary schools. Mukuba is a boys’ school, and Nkana is a mixed school. Their students live up to 10 kilometers away and usually walk to school.

Shaping Chomutov Together

As a small northwestern town, Chomutov is dealing with an outflow of residents who feel cut off and overlooked by the city. In an effort to prevent these problems in the future, the city found a simple solution in the form of participatory budgeting.

T. G. Masaryk elementary School and Nursery in Písek, Czech Republic

At the end of 2017, the pupils of the T. G. Masaryk Primary School in Písek participated in the "School PB". Thanks to it, they tried out how they could take part in decisions that concern them.

Hroznová Elementary School, Brno, Czech Republic

In October and November 2017 the school took part in the Participatory Budget for Schools project. In the context of the project the school received CZK 30,000 from the Brno-Centre City Council.

Elementary School, Strossmayerovo náměstí, The Prague 7 District

In 2017, the Prague 7 city district decided to try out the new D21 methodology for participatory school budgets. Thus in September and October, students at seven elementary schools in Prague 7 could decide on how their school would use 50,000 CZK ($2,320) made available to them by the town hall.
